Jul 14, 16:03 PDT Resolved - Earlier today, a poorly formed search query was executed against one of our Elasticsearch clusters containing customer event logs. This query consumed all available search queues across the cluster and after numerous attempts, we were unable to terminate the queries while the cluster was online. As a result, we performed a rolling restart of the cluster, which resulted in a rebalance of the nodes. Once the rebalancing was completed, we re-enabled the events API and logs section of the control panel. To help mitigate future issues, we've deployed timeouts on queries that will help prevent long-running operations from compromising the performance of our search infrastructure.Jul 14, 15:15 PDT Monitoring - The Events API and Logs tab have been bought back up and are now in a functional state. Additionally, customers should ensure there are no IP-based ACLs that would prevent communication to new IP addresses that may be added or removed at any time. Nov 7, 06:34 PSTScheduled - Mailgun will soon be introducing several infrastructure improvements that will result in changes to the IP addresses of our HTTP and SMTP API endpoints. Our infrastructure upgrades will result in more frequent changes to these IP addresses in the future and customers should ensure that they are only using our supported hostnames when connecting to the Mailgun service. Additionally, customers should ensure there are no IP-based ACLs that would prevent communication to new IP addresses that may be added or removed at any time. Mar 23, 16:00 PDT Resolved - Overview On 3/23/16 between roughly 17:40 - 17:47 UTC , our monitoring system alerted us that Mailgun was not delivering any messages. We quickly discovered that delivery failure linked to a recent deployment of our API and we immediately rolled back those changes. Details The changes triggered a bug in our code where we accepted a message but did not store the message within our message store. Due to this, messages that we accepted were lost and we are unable to retrieve or deliver them. We lost roughly 8,000 inbound messages and 129,000 outbound messages. While we gathered data to the extent of the message loss these messages remained within our queue which caused some delays until 21:30 UTC . Mitigation To prevent this from happening again, we've implemented additional failsafes to our code to ensure that if we acknowledge having accepted a message, that message has successfully been stored without any errors. We'll be reaching out to all customers affected by this outage with details of the messages lost and how to obtain a credit towards your invoice. We're very sorry about this incident and for any inconvenience this may have caused, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our support team.

Intermittent errors when using the API

Mar 22, 17:22 PDT Resolved - On 3/22/16 between 13:00 - 16:00 UTC we experienced an outage to parts of our API. This outage was caused by a configuration change to our internal load balancer that was deployed to production on 3/21/16 but only manifested itself under high load. When we discovered the cause of the latency was issues we rolled back our change and the load balancer performance, and in turn our API performance, returned back to normal. No messages were lost during the outage.

Jan 26, 12:20 PDT Postmortem - Synopsis ======= Today at 15:36 UTC two of our Cassandra nodes died. In all our Cassandra clusters we use production-recommended settings of replication factor 3 and consistency level 2 which provides strong data consistency and allows us to tolerate one node being down without any noticeable impact. Due to the unfortunate circumstances both died nodes belonged to the same cluster. After discovering and analyzing the issue we immediately started the process of decommissioning the faulty nodes from the cluster. The errors stopped completely at 17:51 UTC and things have been performing smoothly since then. Impact ====== We utilize multiple Cassandra clusters for different types of messages. The affected cluster is used for storing large (>500KB) messages only so only requests with such messages could have been rejected. Requests with smaller messages are routed to a different set of clusters so they weren't affected. Investigation of logs also shows that no routes, batch messages and mailing lists were rejected during that time interval. Some messages and routes that already were in the queue at the time of the incident were delayed due this issue and retried later. Actions ====== First of all, we're updating our API (both HTTP and SMTP) to return a more appropriate response codes in case of such issues. For example, in case of SMTP we return 554 while the more appropriate code would be 421 Service Not Available which would mean a temporary error making sender retry the message. Also, we're improving monitoring so that we can react to such issues faster and introducing fallback clusters for big messages so that we can retry messages in case the primary one fails. Jan 15, 11:15 PDT Postmortem - While performing a root cause analysis of last nights outage, we discovered that the outage affected more customers than originally assessed. As we mentioned in the incident, last night during routine maintenance of our etcd cluster we had an outage caused by a misconfiguration that took longer than expected to resolve. During that time job processing was also affected as it relies on the etcd cluster for internal job routing. Job processing consists of batch sending (sending to 20 or more recipients), routing (incoming messages), and mailing lists. During the outage, because the job processing service could not route jobs correctly, jobs were retried at 30 minute intervals which lead to some customers experiencing double delivery during the outage. Once the cluster was restored, jobs were once again routed correctly, and double delivery stopped. **Note**: No batch jobs, routes (incoming messages), or mailing lists were lost.
