Network Infrastructure - North Central US

SUMMARY OF IMPACT: Between 05:40 and 11:45 on 19 Nov 2017, a subset of customers in North Central US may have experienced difficulties connecting to resources hosted in this region due to an underlying Infrastructure event which is now mitigated. Downstream impact was seen by some Azure services that rely on Networking, including: Virtual Machines, App Services, Visual Studio Team Servies, Key Vault and Scheduler, manifesting in increased latency and timeouts for some customers during this impact window. PRELIMINARY ROOT CAUSE: Engineers determined that a network device experienced a hardware fault and that network traffic was not automatically rerouted. MITIGATION: Engineers took the faulty network device out of rotation and rerouted network traffic to mitigate the issue. NEXT STEPS: Engineers will continue to investigate the full root cause and a report will be published in approximately 48-72 hours.

Multiple Services - Central Canada

SUMMARY OF IMPACT: Between 16:47 and 17:20 UTC on 28 May 2017, a subset of customers in Canada Central may have intermittently experienced degraded performance, network drops or time outs when accessing their Azure resources hosted in this region. Engineers have determined that this is caused by an underlying Network Infrastructure Event in this region. PRELIMINARY ROOT CAUSE: Monitoring alerted engineers of network flapping through one network device. MITIGATION: Engineering teams immediately removed the router from rotation and allowed traffic to failover to healthy routes. Once it was established that the network traffic flapping had stopped, engineers brought the removed device back into rotation. NEXT STEPS: Engineers will continue to monitor the health of traffic in the region and work with partners to understand the cause of the packet drops.

Summary of impact: Between 23:23 on 21 Mar 2017 and 01:35 UTC on 22 Mar 2017, a subset of customers may have experienced increased latency or network timeouts while attempting to access Azure resources with traffic passing through the East Coast.  Preliminary root cause: Engineers have identified the preliminary root cause as infrastructure impacted by a facilities issue in a 3rd party regional routing site located in South East US. Mitigation: Engineers executed standard procedures to redirect traffic and isolate the impacted facility restoring expected routing availability Next steps: Engineers will continue to investigate the full root cause and a report will be published in approximately 48-72 hours.

Network Infrastructure and Storage - East US 2 - Partial Service Interruption

SUMMARY OF IMPACT: Between 16:40 and 19:15 UTC on 11 Nov, 2015 customers in East US 2 experienced issues accessing their Azure services due to an underlying Network Infrastructure issue. Customers with hosted services in the East US 2 region experienced high levels of latency, typically cycling on 5-8 minute intervals as a result of issues with 3 core routers which were rebooting. PRELIMINARY ROOT CAUSE: Our investigations suggest that an uptick in traffic triggered a device bug, which caused core router reboots, resulting in significant impact to core Azure services including Storage and services dependent on core Azure technologies. A full list of impacted services will remain in the status.azure.com history tab. MITIGATION: Engineers took steps to accommodate the increases in traffic, while sealing off impact from the device bug. NEXT STEPS: Microsoft will work with the router device vendor for further root cause analysis to fully understand the issues the routers experienced.
